Former NHL player Gino Odjick has died at 52 years. He became a professional NHL hockey player in 1990 when he was drafted by Vancouver Canucks. He played NHL for twelve seasons, the last season in 2002 for Montreal Canadians. Gino died of a heart attack on Sunday, January 15, 2023. His friend Peter Leech announced his death: “ He had a heart attack, and couldn’t recover from it. We knew this day was going to come, but we didn’t know when. We were hoping much later.”
On June 2014, he was at the Vancouver General Hospital diagnosed with a very rare blood disorder, that attacked his heart. Substances called amyloid proteins – produced by cells in bone marrow – build up in organs and deposit in tissue or organs. The proteins are very sticky and take hold in organs causing serious damage. The disease can affect different organs in different patients, but it typically occurs in the heart, kidneys, liver, spleen, or gastrointestinal tract. The cause is still unknown. After diagnosis, he took experimental treatment in Ottawa and successfully recovered.

Gino Odjick’s name became another name on the list of the sports persons who died prematurely.
