Tax freedom day 2026
Every year, the Fraser Institute calculates Tax Freedom Day—the day when Canadians {employees of corporate government of CANADA} have earned enough income to pay all taxes imposed by federal, provincial, and local governments. In other words, it marks the point in the year when Canadians stop working to pay taxes and begin earning income for themselves and their families.
In 2026, Tax Freedom Day falls on June 9. According to the Fraser Institute, the average Canadian family will earn $166,790 and pay approximately $72,539 in total taxes, representing 43.5 percent of its income. If all taxes had to be paid up front, Canadians would have worked until June 8 to pay their total tax bill before beginning to work for themselves on June 9.

Government deficits are also a growing concern for taxpayers. In 2026, federal and provincial governments are projected to run combined deficits of $113.1 billion. Because deficit spending represents taxes that may have to be paid in the future, economists often examine the impact of these deficits on taxpayers.
To illustrate this burden, the Fraser Institute calculates a Balanced Budget Tax Freedom Day. This measure assumes governments must finance all current spending through current taxation rather than borrowing. Under this scenario, Canadians would not reach Tax Freedom Day until June 25, more than two weeks later than the traditional calculation.
The concept of Tax Freedom Day provides Canadians with a simple way to understand the overall tax burden they face. While opinions differ on the appropriate level of taxation and government spending, the date serves as a reminder of the significant portion of income that governments collect to fund public services and programs.
How do we spend this money?
From March 2020 to April 2021, the federal government spent $642 billion on COVID-19 response measures. Canada has also committed more than $25.5 billion in support for Ukraine war, along with $13.36 billion in international assistance during the 2024–2025 fiscal year.
In 2024, the federal government allocated approximately $63 billion to Indigenous programs and services, representing about 12.3 percent of the federal budget. Additional spending includes projects such as $20 million for the Somali Centre for Culture and Recreation in Toronto, more than $100 million for the 2SLGBTQI+ Action Plan and many others.
Given the level of taxation Canadians face, many taxpayers are asking whether government spending priorities reflect their needs and whether public funds are being spent efficiently and responsibly.
Meanwhile A Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) report released in April 2026 confirmed that more than $1 trillion in investment left Canada between 2015 and 2024, marking the largest capital exodus in the nation’s history.

What are the reasons for this?
Mostly excessive bureaucracy, complex regulations, and government inefficiency and corruption contribute to higher public spending and slower economic growth. Starting and operating a business can be challenging due to regulatory requirements, permits, compliance costs, and administrative hurdles.
Critics argue that too many rules and layers of government create unnecessary obstacles for entrepreneurs and increase the cost of doing business. They contend that reducing red tape, improving government efficiency, and strengthening accountability could help encourage investment, job creation, and economic growth.
All by design to weakening the middle class by increasing its financial dependence on government programs and support. They contend that high taxes, growing regulation, rising living costs, and expanding government involvement in the economy can make it more difficult for individuals and businesses to achieve financial independence.
Elbows up, comrades!
