Trudeau gave Quebec a special deal on carbon tax
The federal government implemented a coordinated nation-wide carbon price, beginning at $20 per tonne of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions (tCO2e) in 2019 and rising to $65 per tonne as of April 1, 2023. All provinces and territories must maintain a carbon price of at least $65 per tCO2e in 2023. As of 2019, over 70 jurisdictions, representing about 20% of global GHG emissions, have put a price on carbon.

But, “Trudeau is giving Quebec a special deal on carbon taxes and giving other Canadians higher gas prices and heating bills,” said Franco Terrazzano, Federal Director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation {CTF}. “The solution is simple: Trudeau should scrap his carbon tax and lower gas prices and home heating bills across Canada.”
British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador are all raised the carbon tax to 14 cents per litre of gas next year and 37 cents per litre of gas by 2030.
Quebec’s provincial cap and trade carbon tax currently costs about nine cents per litre of gas and must stay above 4.8 cents per litre next year. Quebec’s provincial carbon tax is set to rise to 23 cents per litre of gas by 2030, according to LaPresse.
On April 1, 2023, B.C.’s carbon tax rate rose from $50 to $65 per tCO2e. To protect affordability, revenues generated by the new carbon tax increases will be directed to carbon tax relief for British Columbians through enhancements to the Climate Action Tax Credit, BC government stated.
Different fuels generate different amounts of GHG emissions. The April 2023 carbon tax rate of $65 per tonne must be translated based on the type of fuel used. Below are rates for select fuels.
Fuel | Tax Rate Based on $50/Tonne of Emissions |
Gasoline | 14.31 ¢/litre |
Diesel (light fuel oil) | 16.85 ¢/litre |
Natural gas | 12.39 ¢/cubic meter |
“Trudeau’s special deal for Quebec shows the carbon tax was always about politics, not the environment,” said Terrazzano.
Justin Trudeau proved as many times before, then he has a “special” approach to his home province than to rest of the country. Not even mention, agenda which he has been pushing onto Canadians. His politic it’s creating one of the biggest division in Canadian history, and looks like, he is proud of it.
