Texas passed a law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in schools
In 2025, the Texas Legislature passed Senate Bill 10, A Bill to be entitled an Act, relating to the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms and was signed by Gov. Greg Abbott.
Beginning in the 2025–2026 school year, Texas public school classrooms are required to display the Ten Commandments. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Phil King, a Republican from Weatherford, mandates that every classroom post a visibly displayed poster measuring at least 16 by 20 inches. The poster may include only the text specified in the bill, and no additional or similar displays are permitted.
During floor debate Saturday, Rep. Candy Noble, a Republican from Lucas who is carrying the bill in the House, said, “It is incumbent on all of us to follow God’s law, and I think we would all be better off if we did.”
Supporters of the measure argue that the Ten Commandments and broader Christian teachings are foundational to U.S. history. The legislation reflects a growing national movement that challenges the traditional interpretation of church–state separation.
Commandments described by Subsection (a) of the Bill 10 must read as follows:
The Ten Commandments
- AM the LORD thy God. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
- Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven images.
- Thou shalt not take the Name of the Lord thy God in vain.
- Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
- Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
- Thou shalt not kill.
- Thou shalt not commit adultery.
- Thou shalt not steal.
- Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
- Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor ’s house. Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor ’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his cattle, nor anything that is thy neighbor ’s.”

At least a dozen other states have considered similar proposals including Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Mississippi, South Dakota, Indiana, West Virginia and South Carolina.
Other states, like Idaho and Kentucky, have introduced Bible reading and text about “God We Trust” but not the Ten Commandments as a specific requirement.
Opponents argued that because the constitution guarantees freedom of religion, the Bill could potentially be unconstitutional, as it might effectively create a one state religion. Individuals within eleven school districts have chosen to challenge SB 10 in court. A federal judge in San Antonio has temporarily halted SB 10’s enforceability only in the eleven districts that are parties to the litigation.
Rabbi Mara Nathan and other from San Antonio who initiated a court case challenging a Texas statute that required the posting of a version of the protestant Ten Commandments in public schools. He argued that the statute violated the higher law of the United States Constitution.

All other school districts in Texas are currently required to display the Ten Commandments in classrooms in accordance with state law.
