Alberta Wallet- first digital ID in Canada

Friday, August 29, Premier Danielle Smith introduced Alberta Wallet, which became Canada’s first digital ID system. It allows residents of Alberta to access government services and identification digitally through an app.

Key Features of Alberta Wallet:

1. Digital Identification:
   • The Alberta Wallet app allows users to store a digital version of their Alberta Driver’s License or Alberta Identification Card (ID), making it possible to carry official ID on your smartphone.
   • This digital ID is verified through a secure and encrypted system, ensuring privacy and protection against fraud.
2. Integration with Government Services:
   • Alberta Wallet enables users to access a variety of provincial services online, making it easier to complete tasks like renewing a driver’s license, booking appointments, or interacting with government platforms.
3. Digital Proof of Age:
   • The app allows individuals to use their digital ID as proof of age, making it useful in contexts like verifying eligibility for age-restricted products or services (e.g., alcohol or tobacco purchases).
4. Security and Privacy:
   • Alberta Wallet is designed with security in mind. The app uses advanced encryption to protect personal data, and residents can enable biometric authentication (such as fingerprint or facial recognition) for added security.
5. Other Features:
   • Alberta Wallet is part of the broader trend of digitizing various services and IDs. It can also be expanded in the future to store other forms of digital credentials like health cards, insurance information, bank account, pension, or even academic qualifications.

“Albertans deserve better, faster and smarter services,” said Premier Danielle Smith. 

“That’s why we’re launching this optional tool to supplement Albertans’ existing paper health cards. If you choose to use the new Alberta Wallet, you remain in control of your personal information, which will stay private and only accessible to you.”

Alberta also introduced the mobile health card. That one will be available for Albertans 14 and older. Parents and guardians will be able to add their children’s mobile health card to their own Alberta Wallets. Spouses and interdependent partners can also add each other’s mobile health card to their Alberta Wallets.

“Albertans expect modern, convenient service delivery and that includes how they obtain, store and renew important government documents,” said Nate Glubish, Minister of Technology and Innovation.

“With the Alberta Wallet, we are providing a secure, user-friendly option for those who prefer it. This is the kind of innovation that puts Albertans first.”

To access the wallet, Albertans will need a Verified Alberta.ca Account and a MyHealth Records account to add their mobile health card. More documents will be added over time and Albertans will be able to access them through the mobile application or online through their Verified Alberta.ca Account.

As part of the health care card modernization initiative, Alberta will also introduce an integrated driver’s licence and health care card in 2026.

The new Alberta Wallet and mobile health card are optional for now, until enough people sign up and it becomes mandatory — that’s a certainty.

“This is basically an officially launched social credit system, where the government can grant or deny access to services based on your behavior.”
