Non- profit campaign group the Future of Life Institute published An open letter, which had been signed by more than 1,100 individuals. The letter stated: “We call on all AI labs to immediately pause for at least 6 month the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT- 4. This pause should be public and verifiable and include all key actors. If such a pause can not be enacted quickly, government should step in and institute moratorium.”
The letter was also signed by Apple Co- founder Steve Wozniak, Skype Co- Founder Jaan Tallinn, Yoshua Bengio- Founder and Scientific Director of Mila, Turing Prize winner and professor at University of Montreal, Stuart Russel Berkeley- Professor of Computer Science, director of the Center for Intelligent Systems, and co- author of the standard textbook “Artificial Intelligence: A modern Approach”, Yuval Noah Harari- author and professor in Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and many others.

The open letter came as a reaction to AI startups which is trying to develop more powerful and independent AI system to rival ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot develop by AI startup has gained huge popularity. The chat application signed up to 1 million people within first five days after was launched, and after two months more than 100 million monthly users.
“As stated in the widely- endorsed Asilomar AI Principles, Advanced AI could represent a profound change in the history of life on Earth,” the letter stated. “Unfortunately, this level of planning and management is not happening, even thought recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one- not even their creators- can understand, predict, or reliably control,” letter added.
Last month Reuters agency reported that, Chinese internet giant Tencent Holdings created experts’ team to work on a ChatGPT- like chatbot. Alibaba group already announced plans to launch their own AI chatbot and incorporate the technology into their business. Kunlun Tech, China Telecom Corp, NetEase, Kuaishou Technology are just few that made announcement on AI technology.
Are we got already to far and it is the risk involved? Yes, as Elon Musk says:” there are some scary outcomes,” He continued:” the pace of AI progress is faster than people realize. It would be fairly obvious if you saw a robot walking around talking and behaving like a person…. What’s not obvious is a huge server bank in a dark vault somewhere with an intelligence that’s potentially vastly greater than what a human mind can do. It’s eyes and ears would be everywhere, every camera, every microphone, and device that’s network accessible.”
