Silent protest in CSRD
The Regular Board of Directors meeting of the Columbia Shuswap Regional District {CSRD} occurred in the Salmon Arm CSRD Boardroom on February 16, 2023. During the meeting about twenty activists silently protested the erection of a 58.0 meter-tall Self-Supporting Cell Tower and ancillary radio equipment. The proposed tower if approved, would be situated on privately owned property in Sorrento, 1030 Dilworth Road. The tower was proposed to CSRD by the telecommunication giant Telus, in which the largest institutional shareholder is the Royal Bank of Canada.
TELUS is proposing to construct the tower directly south of an existing hydro utility corridor that runs through the property. All the equipment necessary to operate the proposed tower facility will reside within a compound located at the base of the tower. The subject property is 79.97 acres and is currently zoned AR1-Agriculture. The proposed tower location is setback from adjacent land uses while being centrally located in an area that needs improved wireless service. The tower, if constructed, will provide improved high-speed internet access and wireless service to the Sorrento community. {source CSRD}

Protestors are worried about the health and environmental impact on the local community. As one protestor said, ”Multiple studies have shown that within the towers outreach there are significantly decreased populations of pollinators and increases in various type of cancers and other illnesses such as ADHD and Alzheimer disease . We must stop that!” He continued:” Somebody must be accountable for this!”
More about the health risk and environmental hazards of 5G towers and wireless technology was described in a letter from James G. Flynn. He spent 22 years of his military career in the Electronic Warfare {EW} and Signals Intelligence {SIGINT} unit, including two years at the National Defense Headquarters {NDHQ} Ottawa at the Directorate of Electronic Warfare {DEW}. February 23, at 5.00 PM Telus will host an online digital public meeting via the WEBEX application, including two presentations, one at 5.00 PM, and the second one at 5.30 PM. Each presentation will be followed by a question and answer period.
Local activists sent CSRD a Delegation request form to allow them to voice their concerns about the tower issue during the Board of Directors meeting but have not received approval to do so. In efforts to make their voices heard the delegation has started a petition so that meaningful dialogue may occur.
Another planning meeting against the proposed 5G Cell Tower will occur in Sorrento Memorial Hall, on February 23, at 5.00 PM. Activists decided to hold an inclusive in-person community meeting with all stakeholders invited to participate, to inform about the benefits and risks of the tower.
There are hundreds of various antennas, telecommunications towers, and other transmitters in every city and town in this country. Each one can cause some risks to human health, depending on the frequency and the time of exposure. To check the transmitters in your area, click on the link below.

Due to increasing concerns of local activists, Telus extended the public comment deadline on March, 2nd, 2023. The battle continues.
