Firearm restriction extended
On December 5, 2024, the Government of Canada amended the Regulations Prescribing Certain Firearms and Other Weapons, Components and Parts of Weapons, Accessories, Cartridge Magazines, Ammunition and Projectiles as Prohibited or Restricted (commonly referred to as the “Classification Regulations”). The amendments have the effect of reclassifying certain named firearms and their variants as prohibited.
The detailed list of the 324 unique makes and models of the newly prohibited firearms can be found in the Canada Gazette.
The Firearms Reference Table has been updated to reflect the new classification of these firearms as prohibited. The prohibition takes effect immediately.
An Amnesty Order, expiring October 30, 2025, has been introduced which protects owners who were in legal possession of one or more of these newly prohibited firearms on the day the amendments to the Classification Regulations came into force, December 5, 2024. The Amnesty Order will allow owners the time to come into compliance with the law.
That brings the total number of outlawed firearms in the land of snow and poutine to more than 2,300. According to the AP, “The federal government says it is working with provinces, territories and police on a planned buyback of prohibited weapons from individual owners.”
Defence Minister Bill Blair explains how the Liberals’ gun buyback could see Canadians’ firearms sent to Ukraine. “Every bit of assistance we can offer to the Ukrainians is one step towards their victory,” he adds.

Canadian Coalition for Firearm Rights already made a statement:
We share many Canadians’ disappointment, at yet again another low point for the Liberal\NDP Government. Despite the indisputable reality that the Liberals, along with the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois have failed to make Canadians safer, it seems they have learned nothing. Over the last 8 years, with Bill C71, the May 2020 long gun ban, the handgun ban and Bill C21, Canadians have seen firearm related violence more than double. It’s now at a higher level than at any point in the last 30 years. These are the facts.
It’s our position that this is typical Liberal Party divide and conquer politics. They know they are out of time and Canadians are out of money. They know the Tories will repeal it all in less than 10 months. They haven’t used an Order in Council to deal with the daily violence plaguing Canada. No action on repeat violent offenders. No response to the pleas of law enforcement. Nothing.
This is the evidence that this is a channel changer for a government in a political race for 3rd place with the NDP.
This assault on licensed firearm retailers, fish and game clubs and licensed firearm owners is unacceptable. This entire scheme affects exclusively licensed gun owners.
The Liberals continued abuse of process using Orders in Council where they should be using legislation is also completely unacceptable. The Liberals have normalized the subversion of Canada’s Democratic process for their own political maneuvering.
The CCFR will be in the Federal Court of Appeal December 9th and 10th fighting the Liberal’s inappropriate use of the OIC.
